About Us

The Latin America and Global IR research group is coordinated by Prof. Fernanda Barasuol (Federal University of Grande Dourados), Dr. Luiza Cerioli (University of Kassel and Center for Latin American Studies, CELA), and Prof. Mariana Kalil (Brazilian War College). Originally created with a Brazilian focus (within BRaS, a former German institution dedicated to Brazilian studies), the group now focuses on pluralizing and de-Westernizing International Relations (IR) from Global South perspectives, with particular attention to Latin America and its multiple connections to global politics. 

We ask: how can Global IR provide a framework for grasping the region’s place in global power/knowledge relations? What does the region teach us? How does it help progress the discipline beyond its Western origins?

The group brings together scholars from different countries, institutions, and career backgrounds, creating a vibrant intellectual space for critical debates, collaborative projects, and mutual support through regularly held online meetings and other initiatives.
